Bhakta Kanakadasa is indeed one of the most revered figures of Karnataka, celebrated for his deep devotion, philosophical wisdom, and contributions to Kannada literature and music. Born in the 16th century, Kanakadasa was a poet-saint, philosopher, and musician belonging to the Haridasa tradition of Bhakti movement in India.

1.    Early Life: Kanakadasa was born in the Kuruba (shepherd) community in Bada village of the present-day Haveri district. His original name was Thimmappa Nayaka. He was a warrior by profession before he devoted his life to spirituality.

2.    Philosophy and Devotion: Kanakadasa’s devotion to Lord Krishna, particularly Udupi Krishna, is legendary. His works reflect themes of equality, social justice, and devotion. His philosophy emphasized that true devotion surpasses caste, creed, and social barriers.

3.    Literary Contributions: Kanakadasa is credited with composing numerous keertanas (devotional songs), padagalu (verses), and philosophical works in Kannada. His compositions are part of the Haridasa Sahitya and are deeply rooted in bhakti (devotion) and tatva (philosophy).

4.    The Story of Kanakana Kindi: A well-known episode from Kanakadasa’s life is his visit to the Udupi Sri Krishna Temple. As per tradition, entry was restricted to certain communities. Despite being denied entry, Kanakadasa sang fervently to Lord Krishna. Legend has it that the deity turned around to face him, breaking open a wall, creating a small window now famously called “Kanakana Kindi” (Kanaka’s window).
