Humanity beyond boundaries- 2

Humanity can dissolve geographical boundaries between countries

Geographical boundaries can create physical separations between people, but they don’t necessarily divide humanity on a deeper level.

I recently happened to be at Colombo -SriLanka for receiving Asian Iconic award for providing green and sustainable products and services in Construction Industry. When I met other awardees from other SAARC countries, I noticed that boundaries can create physical separations between people, but they don’t necessarily divide humanity on a deeper level.

In this article just taking our country India & our neighbouring beautiful country Sri Lanka

The art forms of India and Sri Lanka share many similarities, reflecting their intertwined histories and cultural exchanges. Here are some notable aspects:

Traditional Art Forms

Painting:

  1. India: Known for its diverse styles like Madhubani, Warli, and Tanjore paintings.
  2. Sri Lanka: Famous for its ancient frescoes, such as those at Sigiriya, and traditional Kandyan paintings.

Sculpture:

  1. India: Renowned for its intricate temple carvings and statues, such as those in Khajuraho and Ellora.
  2. Sri Lanka: Notable for its Buddha statues and temple carvings, particularly in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa

Temple Architecture

  1. India: Dravidian Style: Predominant in South India, characterized by towering gopurams (gateway towers) and intricate carvings. Examples include the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai and the Brihadeeswarar Temple in Thanjavur. Nagara Style: Common in North India, featuring beehive-shaped shikharas (spires) and elaborate sculptures. Notable examples are the Khajuraho Temples and the Sun Temple in Konark.
  2. Sri Lanka: Buddhist Stupas: Known for their large, dome-shaped structures, such as the Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya in Anuradhapura. Rock Temples: Carved into rock faces, like the Dambulla Cave Temple, showcasing intricate frescoes and statues.

Colonial Architecture

Both countries have a rich legacy of colonial architecture, influenced by their British colonial past. This includes:

  1. India: Iconic structures like the Victoria Memorial in Kolkata and the Gateway of India in Mumbai.
  2. Sri Lanka: Notable buildings such as the Old Parliament Building in Colombo and the Galle Face Hotel.

Modern and Contemporary Architecture

  1. India: Sustainable Designs: Modern architects focus on sustainability, incorporating green building practices. Examples include the Infosys campus in Mysore and the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad. Innovative Structures: Contemporary designs like the Lotus Temple in Delhi and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus in Mumbai.
  2. Sri Lanka: Geoffrey Bawa’s Influence: Renowned for integrating natural landscapes with built environments, as seen in the Kandalama Hotel and the Parliament Building in Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte. Eco-friendly Designs: Emphasis on sustainable architecture, with projects like the Jetwing Vil Uyana resort.

Residential Architecture

  1. India: Traditional Homes: Vary widely across regions, from Kerala’s nalukettu (courtyard houses) to Rajasthan’s havelis (mansions). Modern Residences: Incorporate contemporary designs with traditional elements, focusing on functionality and aesthetics.
  2. Sri Lanka: Vernacular Architecture: Emphasizes harmony with nature, using local materials and traditional techniques. Modern Homes: Blend traditional styles with modern amenities, often featuring open layouts and natural ventilation.

These architectural styles highlight the rich cultural heritage and innovative spirit of both India and Sri Lanka

While geographical boundaries can create physical and sometimes political separations, the essence of humanity—our shared experiences, challenges, and aspirations—transcends these divisions. What are your thoughts on this? Do you feel that certain aspects of human connection are particularly strong despite geographical boundaries.
