Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, more commonly known as Sir M. Visvesvaraya often called the “Gem of Karnataka,” was a pioneering engineer, statesman, and visionary from India, renowned for his immense contributions to Karnataka and the nation as a whole. Born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli, Karnataka, he is celebrated for his innovative work in civil engineering and for transforming the Mysore state into a model of progressive governance.

One of his most notable achievements was the design and construction of the Krishna Raja Sagar (KRS) dam across the Cauvery River near Mysore. This dam, constructed with his guidance and vision, not only helped in irrigation but also boosted drinking water supply and power generation, laying a foundation for economic and social development. His contribution to the development of Mysore Iron Works (now Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Limited) was instrumental in the growth of industry in the region.

Visvesvaraya’s dedication to his work earned him the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1955.
